JW Insights 2018

Our annual conference explored the latest data innovations, trends, and best practices in digital video

On Wednesday, June 6, 2018, JW Player proudly held our fifth annual JW Insights conference at NYC event venue Apella. We invited a who’s who lineup of digital video industry experts and leaders to share their wisdom about harnessing the power of data (and other best practices) to engage viewers and boost revenues.

More than 300 premium publishers, broadcasters, partners, and influencers joined us for enriching discussions on industry hot topics, including video intelligence, machine learning, video player bidding, and content syndication. Here are a few highlights and takeaways from our most successful conference to date.

JW Recommendations: Captivate Your Audience with Video

Updates that empower publishers to directly enhance engagement with the video experiences viewers want, curated at scale

In light of increased fragmentation and competition, it is no longer enough to simply present content to audiences and expect increased engagement. Viewers today expect to engage with appealing and slick content presentations that work well across all devices. Publishers that fail in this execution suffer from low view counts, high abandonment rates, and fewer return visits. In the second part of our Recommendations blog post series, we will discuss the visual improvements to Recommendations that enhance user interaction with content.

JW Recommendations: Anticipating Your Audience’s Content and Viewing Needs

Updates that empower publishers to directly enhance engagement with the video experiences viewers want, curated at scale Online video continues its explosive growth, and publishers are well positioned to capitalize on increasing viewership. However, they are often limited by the fragmentation of, and competition for, viewer attention in this new landscape. JW Recommendations is an automated solution that surfaces contextually relevant content from a publisher’s library to its audiences, at scale. Recommendations curates content in real-time and presents stunning experiences that entice viewers to watch more all while providing publishers with complete control. In a two-part blog series, we will cover all the important information about today’s release of the latest JW Recommendations. This updated tool gives publishers what they need to anticipate and deliver the experiences that their viewers desire—deepening audience engagement.

How JW Player’s Recommendations Engine Enhances Audience Engagement You’ve seen them everywhere: shopping at Amazon, watching shows on Netflix, or discovering “people you may know” on LinkedIn. Recommendations engines allow you to view related content and products based on your online consumption behavior. For publishers, recommendations can be an especially powerful tool in executing your video strategy. They keep eyes on the page and increase click-throughs, strengthening retention when competition for user attention is fierce. These results came through loud and clear with the A/B test of JW Player’s Recommendations engine.

Introducing ‘Promote’ — A Great Tool for Branded Content

Publishers often tell us that they want to balance the benefits of automatic curation using JW Recommendations with the option to retain editorial control. One common use case is for branded or partner content that may require a specific level of exposure. JW Platform’s tag-based business rules already provide some measure of control around the portion of the video library that recommended videos are drawn from, but sometimes more control is needed. Now we’re introducing ‘Promote,’ a new feature of JW Recommendations that lets you easily choose specific videos or playlists to place in the first or second position of a Recommended playlist, ahead of any videos chosen by our powerful algorithms. Branded content, promotional videos, or key programming has guaranteed placement in prime impression slots even when it might not be recommended to viewers.
