Casting and AirPlay Updates in JW 7.9

JW 7.9 brings a major refactor to Casting support that aims to make integrating with the popular second screen experience even easier. You are no longer required to register with Google and you do not have to set up a custom receiver application. Instead we have integrated directly with the default receiver application provided by Google. This allows more video formats to be supported like MPEG-DASH and provides a much quicker setup time to Cast.

JW 7.9 also adds support for AirPlay directly within the player controls, allowing viewers to watch videos on AirPlay-supported devices like AppleTV.

Specific Updates

With the transition to the default receiver application, custom start and end screens are no longer supported.

Ads are officially no longer supported; only main videos will be cast to the Cast-enabled device.

Ads are not supported on the default receiver application

Casting now works reliably on Android Chrome directly from JW Player controls.

Getting Started

Turn casting on for your players easily in the Player Builder from within your account. The casting toggle works for both AirPlay and Chromecast. Any style customizations or start/end screens that were previously set are ignored and the connection to the old receiver application immediately works with the new default receiver.

What’s Next

As with any update to the player we will track usage and feedback and see what can be done to improve the experience. For example, one request that we would like to implement is a layer from JW Player to connect to an already built and hosted receiver application. Let us know in the comments what you would like to see next!
